Although her icy chariot swept across New England a bit early this year, Winter officially arrives in the Northern Hemisphere at 10:11am ET today, or December 21 at 17:11 UTC.  While the shift is slight at first —mere minutes added to each day— slowly, the increase in sunlight will become more and more noticeable; welcome change indeed.

On this shortest day and longest night, I like to celebrate the change in seasons with a special cocktail toast by firelight. How will you mark the Winter Solstice this year? Find facts about the shift in seasons on EarthSky.com, here.
