First Hints of a Changing Season . . .

The first hints of a changing season: warm breezes from the south and silvery pussy willow catkins, soft against the skin, flirty pink buds on my favorite viburnum and the taste of sweet new maple syrup in a springtime cocktail.

Finally, as the snowbanks reluctantly recede, Spring has decided to make her fashionably late arrival. Of course we all smile in eager anticipation —watching her seductively saunter up the garden path— even if she always makes us a bit impatient in our wait. Hello gorgeous, we sure have missed you . . .

Yay! Sugar moon cocktail. I’m gonna make my own version tonight, too. Good idea. I need to plant me some of that there Witch Hazel – just love those blooms.

Patiently waiting for my fragrant early blooming daphne to wow the backyard!

Your photo of the viburnum buds makes me think of a fist – a fragrant fist to punch beauty into spring. (is that too violent?)

    Ha! Enjoy your cocktail ;)

What exactly is it about yellow? It just seems to have a power —unlike any other hue— to lift the winter-weary spirits. It’s well worth it, my friend. Nothing like an early witch!

Daphne. Ah yes. Our mutual friend, to whom we owe our acquaintance! She’s so clever.

And Viburnum, punching Winter? That’s awesome. Why didn’t I think of that. The icy globe pic from yesteryear could be a tie match, perhaps. Too funny.

Too true about Sunshine Yellow! I’m waiting with baited breath for (the bumper crop of) Curly Hazel catkins to “break”; don’t think I’ve ever noticed female flowers like those in your photo, but trying to stay extra vigilant this year; )
Going to try swapping some Crown Royal for the bourbon in your recipe (and hopefully I can find some nice, dark, smoky syrup to top it off; ) Funny thing though, they’ve recently brought out a Maple version of this Canadian classic, so perhaps someone there saw your cocktail recipe the first time around?
    Cheers! xo D.
